Overview

Help your child discover the vast number of careers that exist in the arts. Here are some practical tips and resources that can help your child make the most of his or her interests, talents and abilities and put them on the road to a satisfying and successful work life.

What is a career in the arts? Many people believe you must be an actor, painter or performer to work in the arts, but we know there are many more lucrative careers that exist “behind the scenes.” At The Center for Arts Education, we have been introducing hundreds of students since 1999 to internships and jobs in the arts industries that were deeply rewarding. Kids from all over New York City have worked and learned at exciting companies such as MTV, Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, Bloomingdales, VIBE Magazine, Rockwell Group, ABC News and Miramax.

Now we’ve taken what we teach to our interns and poured it into the interactive toolkits on this website. Our goal is to provide you with the tools to help your child launch a successful career path in the arts.

In addition to the interactive tools of this website, our Career Development Curriculum is also available to download. The curriculum is divided into five booklets, which reflect established best practices in career development and offer smart activities and practical tips for parents/guardians and students exploring the many exciting career possibilities in the arts and arts-related industries:

Booklet 1: How Well Do You Know Yourself? Readers will: Assess their abilities, interests and personal values. Learn about different communication styles, which many professionals in the arts rely upon to make their message heard. Download Book

Booklet 2: The Career You’d Love to Have Readers will: Learn about all the different kinds of people and skill sets needed to "make art happen." Research the salaries, training and descriptions of different careers that use the arts. Download Book

Booklet 3: Building Your Career Plan Readers will: Identify personal and professional goals, and then make a plan to turn goals into action. Download Book

Booklet 4: How to Get the Job Readers will: Learn how to "de-code" a help wanted ad and analyze what potential employers are asking for. Draft a cover letter and resume, and "sell themselves" to an employer during and after an interview. Learn the basics of networking. Download Book

Booklet 5: Your On-The-Job Survival Kit Readers will: Learn about internships. Analyze "systems," such as a workplace, in which many different people and departments contribute to a working whole. Examine workplace policies and procedures. Brainstorm solutions to typical work problems. Use negotiation to resolve a conflict. Practice creating a budget with which to spend earnings. Download Book

Career Development Program Teacher’s Guide (Great for Parents/Guardians too!) Readers will: Become acquainted with the objectives of the Career Development Program, and how the activities aligned with the New York State Learning Standards and other guidelines. Prepare and guide your child through exercises in the booklets. Obtain additional resources with which to direct your child as they explore careers and goals. Download Book
